2026 Music Industry Trends: Rise of K-pop and Latin Music, Nostalgia for Gen Z

The midyear report from Luminate reveals a significant increase in physical album sales in 2026, driven by K-pop fans. Artists like BTS, Enhypen, and Ateez saw a surge in CD sales, with K-pop albums contributing to nearly 10 percent of the overall increase. BTS’ Arirang, Enhypen’s The Sin: Vanish, and Ateez’s Golden Hour: Part 4 were among the top-selling CDs this year, despite the fact that many buyers do not own CD players.
In addition to the rise in CD sales, streaming numbers for K-pop and Latin music have been on the rise, challenging the dominance of English-language music. Spanish songs now account for 9.4 percent of streams, while Korean music holds steady at 1.1 percent. Arirang by BTS has been a standout performer, making South Korea the world’s third-largest music exporter.
Latin music has seen a surge in popularity among U.S. listeners, with over half of music consumers engaging with the genre. Global on-demand audio streams have increased by 9.8 percent, with R&B and hip-hop still leading in the U.S. market. However, genres like dance and electronic music are gaining traction. Latin music and country music, boosted by artists like Bad Bunny and Morgan Wallen, have also seen growth in streams.
The report also highlights the nostalgia trend among Gen Z listeners, with 60 percent enjoying music from the 1990s or earlier. This trend is reflected in the streaming data, where rock music from the past is popular. Overall, the music industry is experiencing a shift in consumer preferences, with diverse genres gaining prominence and challenging the traditional dominance of English-language music.
